Book Reviews
- Adobe After Effects 7.0: Classroom in a Book: Let's face it. Trying to learn After Effects on your own can be overwhelming. Where do you begin? Well a good place to start is Adobe After Effects 7.0: Classroom in a Book.
- Extreme DV: When I ordered a copy of Extreme DV at Used-Car Prices: How to Write, Direct, Shoot, Edit, and Produce a Digital Video Feature for Less Than $3000 by Rick Schmidt, I was worried that it would just be a rehashing of his earlier book, Feature Filmmaking at Used-Car Prices . I'm glad to report that that isn't the case. It's pretty much all new material.
- Feature Filmmaking at Used Car Prices: Despite a few issues I have with the open letter printed at the front by Ray Carney, I like Feature Filmmaking at Used-Car Prices by Rick Schmidt (see his Web site: http://www.lightvideo.com).
- Rebel Without A Crew: I decided to wait until I had seen Robert Rodriguez's film El Mariachi before writing a review of his book Rebel Without A Crew. The book chronicles how that film launched his career.
- Down and Dirty Pictures: I've only read the first two chapters and I can't put it down. It's a fascinating look at the rise of Bob and Harvey Weinstein (Miramax and Dimension Films). It's also a believable look at the evolution of the Sundance Institute (though I wouldn't bring this book to Park City). The book doesn't pull any punches, and can be rather unflattering of both the Weinsteins and Robert Redford. But it attempts to be fair and I think gives a balanced view of the people, places and history.
- CGI Filmmaking: The Creation of Ghost Warrior: Even if you don't plan to create a CGI-based film, you may find CGI Filmmaking: The Creation of Ghost Warrior by Timothy Albee interesting. The author has worked for Disney, Warner Brothers/Infogrames, on Babylon 5, commericals and video games. He also produced three short films and helped found a couple of animation studios in LA.
- The Ultimate Filmmaker's Guide to Short Films: I'm only half way through Kim Adelman's book The Ultimate Filmmaker's Guide to Short Films and I can already tell you that it's a must-have for anyone interested in creating short films. ... For four years, Kim ran the short film program for Fox Movie Channel. She also produced 19 short films that have played at over 150 festivals.
- Short Films 101: How to Make a Short Film and Launch Your Filmmaking Career: Short Films 101: How to Make a Short Film and Launch Your Filmmaking Career by Frederick Levy - this book compliments Kim Adelman's book The Ultimate Filmmaker's Guide to Short Films and is packed full of useful information. It covers the areas that you need to know: developing a concept, budget, casting, rights, marketing, distribution, etc. and also covers the dreaded film versus video debate.
- Making a Good Script Great: When I was looking for books on how to write a screenplay, the book Making a Good Script Great by Hollywood Script Consultant Linda Seger kept coming up.
- The Complete Book of Scriptwriting: When it comes to books about writing for the screen (large and small) I prefer to read books by people who have actually produced and/or sold something. The subtitle to the book The Complete Book of Scriptwriting by J. Michael Straczynski is "The all-in-one guide to writing and selling screenplays, teleplays, theatrical plays, and animation scripts." The author should know. He is the creator of Babylon 5 and was a writer / producer on Murder, She Wrote.
- Crafting Short Screenplays That Connect (Quick Review): After you've read every other book on writing screenplays, if you still feel like something is missing, pick up a copy of Crafting Short Screenplays That Connect by Claudia Hunter Johnson.
- Writing Short Films: Structure and Content for Screenwriters: I was lead to this book by the authors article A Short-cut to Hollywood Success on the Creative Screenwriting site. The book is very helpful, pointing out the differences that you need to consider when writing a short, as opposed to a feature.
